The introduction is perhaps one of
the most important parts of your thesis. It gives
an overview of your work and is used by others to decide whether
to read the full paper or not. It is therefore important to present
your ideas clearly and in an accepted format.
The introduction presents the research
by situating it (by giving background), presenting
the research problem and saying how and why this
problem will be solved. Without this important
information the reader cannot easily understand the more detailed
information about the research that comes later in the thesis. It
also explains why the research is being done (rationale)
which is crucial for the reader to understand the significance of
the study, the aspects of the problem that will not be discussed
(scope), the factors or conditions that prevent
you from achieving your objectives, what conditions
you assume (assumptions) and finally what aspects
you think will be proved to be correct or incorrect by your research
(hypotheses).

Be careful; try to avoid the mistakes
most students make in their introductions.
